TV and cinema catch-up guide | Five Varied Entertainments

The platforms are full of works released in the last year that are worth seeing. here is the top 5 films and series by our journalist Pascal Leblanc.

The Batman (French version : The Batman)

For a complete contrast to family brunches and dinners, we suggest The Batman, which will change you from illuminated houses and warm hearths. For nearly three hours, director Matt Reeves explores the darkest corners of Gotham through the eye of a Batman who has never been so impassive. Cold in the role, Robert Pattinson displays a certain vulnerability when he removes his mask and becomes Bruce Wayne again. The scenes where the greatest detective in the world must join forces with Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis) to thwart the Riddler (Paul Dano) are thus credible.

About Crave

Top Gun: Maverick

For a good dose of nostalgia, which miraculously never goes too far, Top Gun: Maverick is indicated. We find in Joseph Kosinski’s feature film the strengths of the 1986 original, but with all the qualities that a 2022 action film can offer. The in-flight scenes are stunning, the performances dynamic, the plot solid, the music excellent, and the sound editing impeccable. Tom Cruise remains the brightest star, however, even 36 years later. The charismatic actor embodies a wiser, but equally fearless Pete Mitchell. Impossible not to hope that he succeeds in his mission.

On iTunes, and Club illico from December 21

Andor

For another kind of Star Wars, we highly recommend the series Andor. Set five years before the events of RogueOne – which, themselves, take place just before A New Hope –, the story tells of the birth of the Rebel Alliance. The story’s rather reluctant hero Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) is supported by a constellation of characters of great depth. Among them are activists, politicians and leaders of the Empire. Seeing the workings of this machine of oppression is fascinating. The visuals and music are exceptional throughout the 12 episodes of the first season, while some dialogue can already be described as memorable.

The Boys, season 3

For violent, gritty, shocking and highly entertaining superheroes, there is only one option: The Boys. The most recent season was launched this year, but it is essential to start at the beginning, because several narrative elements gradually reveal themselves – the personality of Homelander (excellent Antony Starr), among others. In this universe, the “supes” are the employees of Vought, a powerful corporation that uses their image to sell every product imaginable. The Boys, they are men without power who want, for various reasons, to eliminate the superheroes. Despite appearances, this series is a brilliant satire of our society.

On Prime Video

Ms.Marvel

For a superheroine whose parents weren’t murdered, we recommend Ms.Marvel. It’s specific, but we wanted a suggestion in which the family plays an important role – House of the Dragon is very good, but we also wanted it to be for the whole family. The bubbly Iman Vellani embodies Kamala Khan, a teenager who loves superheroes and then, overnight, discovers powers. It’s charming, lively and populated by endearing characters. Kind of light, she hulk isn’t bad either. And she, too, still has her family, including a tall, strong, green cousin.
