Türkiye | Istanbul to host 2027 European Games, eyes 2036 Olympics

(Istanbul) Istanbul will host the 2027 European Games, allowing Turkey’s capital to demonstrate its ability to host an international sporting competition and signal its interest in winning the 2036 Summer Olympics .


The group of European Olympic Committees said on Wednesday that its executive committee had voted unanimously in favor of Istanbul as the host city of the competition, although the decision still needs to be approved by national members at a meeting which takes place will take place in June.

The European Games were first presented in 2015 and serve as continental championships as well as Olympic qualifying events in several disciplines. In 2023, Poland will host nearly 7,000 athletes across 29 different disciplines, including athletics, boxing and table tennis.

Istanbul finished second to Tokyo for the 2020 Games, and city leaders said last year they were eyeing the 2036 Summer Olympics.

India also plans to submit its bid for the 2036 Olympics, the Australian city of Brisbane having already received the mandate to organize the 2032 Games.

Turkey and Italy will jointly host the European Men’s Soccer Championship in 2032.
