“We do not participate in the sanctions. We only apply those decided by the United Nations. Russian citizens can absolutely visit our country”replied Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu during an interview on the sidelines of the Forum in Doha, Qatar, to a question about the yachts belonging to the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich which docked this week in the south-west of Turkey.

Western countries, led by the United States and the European Union, imposed unprecedented sanctions against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, placing oligarchs, including Novel Abramovich, and relatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the list of targets of these retaliatory measures. NATO member Turkey, which has close ties with Russia and Ukraine, has not joined in the sanctions targeting Moscow.
