(Ankara) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hinted on Saturday that he would seek a presidential term for the last time, announcing that he would then hand over to “young people”.
“We will launch the construction of the century of Turkey with the support that we ask in our name for the last time from our people in 2023”, affirmed the head of the Turkish state during a speech in Samsun, in the north of the country, hinting that if he wins the 2023 elections, it would be his last term.
“We will hand over this sacred flag to our young people,” he added.
With the approach of the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for June 2023, Mr. Erdogan, in power since 2003 and his Islamoconservative party, the AKP, hope to keep the reins of the country.
But the Turkish president has to face many challenges, including inflation that has reached 84.4%.
In October, Mr Erdogan reiterated his long-standing wish to prepare a new Turkish constitution that would be “democratic, simple and visionary”.
This project had been perceived by some observers as a desire to amend the limit of two presidential terms maximum, provided for by the Turkish constitution.
