The owners of the La Tulipe concert hall, which for 20 years has been installed in the former Variety Theater of Gilles Latulippe avenue Papineau in Montreal, are facing a request for an injunction which could “lead to the closure of the premises unconditionally” , they say.
The company La Tribu published a press release at the end of Tuesday afternoon, saying it was “at the end of its strength and resources” in the face of a situation that has lasted for two years.
According to the press release, a new neighbor bought and “transformed Gilles Latulippe’s old warehouses, which are directly adjacent to the stage of the auditorium, into housing in which he lives”. The City of Montreal would have “authorized by mistake to transform a commercial space into residential space”.
Because the neighbor regularly complains about the noise coming from the auditorium, La Tribu claims to have spent “a fortune in fees of all kinds to defend themselves”, following “dozens of police visits, some accompanied by threats and tickets ($ 1,000 for each ticket, including two last weekend for the Dumas shows) ”.
The owners of La Tulipe claim to have appealed to the City of Montreal, but “in vain”. This is how they will find themselves in class during the week of December 21, facing a request for an injunction that could lead them to an “unconditional closure of the premises”, they write.
“La Tulipe is a building classified as a heritage monument by the Quebec Ministry of Culture. We cannot transform this place into a pharmacy or a condo. It is incredible to think that they want to prevent us from presenting shows in a place that has only culture and entertainment as its vocation. ”
As a last resort, La Tribu has therefore decided to launch a public appeal to Mayor Valérie Plante and Borough Mayor Luc Rabouin, asking them to “put an end to this Kafkaesque episode”.
