Tyler Ennis scores three goals as Senators beat Sabers 5-0

Tyler Ennis scored a hat trick to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 5-0 win over the Buffalo Sabers on Tuesday night.

Drake Batherson and Alex Formenton scored the other Senators goals (13-20-3) as Matt Murray stopped all 32 shots he faced for his 14and career shutout. It was also his third win of the season.

The win, however, cost the Sens dearly as Batherson left the game in the first half after hitting the boards hard. Dylan Gambrel was also injured during the game.

Late in the first, Batherson raced to get the puck behind the Sabers net and goaltender Aaron Dell gave him a push that sent him full speed into the boards, feet first. Batherson was having difficulty putting weight on his left leg and had to be escorted down the tunnel to the locker room.

Dell had a tough night in goal for the Sabres, allowing three goals in the first period. He still faced 47 shots in the game.

Ennis opened the scoring from the 15and minute of play before seeing Batherson double the Sens lead on the power play. Then Ennis came back with his second of the game before the end of the first period.

Formenton made it 4-0 midway through the second period. Tim Stutzle did all the work, pulling Dell out of his net before passing the disc on to Formenton.

Ennis finally completed his hat trick in the final seconds of the game.

It was the first of a four-game home series for the Senators who still can’t accommodate fans at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Mason Marchment picks up three points in Panthers 5-3 win

Mason Marchment scored two goals and added an assist in a 5-3 Florida Panthers victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.

This loss is the fifth in a row conceded by the Jets (0-3-2) who were back at the Canada Life Center for the first time since December 19. They had since played eight straight games on the road due to the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only 250 fans were admitted for Tuesday’s game due to health restrictions in Manitoba. We had brought out the crowd sounds pre-recorded for the occasion.

In addition to Marchment’s brilliance, the Panthers could also rely on his line partner Anton Lundell, who had a goal and an assist in the game.

Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Bennett also found the back of the net for the Panthers (29-9-5). Sam Reinhart and Aaron Ekblad each had two assists.

In net for the winners, Sergei Bobrovsky was solid with 32 saves. The Panthers concluded their five-game road trip with a 3-2-0 record. Since the start of the season, the Floridians have an 8-6-5 record on the road.

Paul Stastny, Kyle Connor and Pierre-Luc Dubois replied for the Jets (17-15-7). Connor Hellebuyck was making his 12th straight start and blocked 27 shots.

Just before the game, the Jets learned that defenseman Josh Morrissey had tested positive for COVID-19.

After one period, the Panthers led 3-2 thanks to the spectacle offered by Marchment. The son of former Jets defenseman Bryan Marchment gave the visitors the lead at 2:09 by deflecting a Lundell shot.

Then Stastny tied the game six minutes later, but Marchment broke again to restore the Panthers lead. Connor made it 2-2 less than a minute later and again Marchment put the Panthers back in control when his shot was deflected by Lundell.

The Jets tied the game again in the second period through Dubois, with the help of Cole Perfetti. Verhaeghe, however, restored the lead to the Panthers before the end of the period. Finally, Bennett completed the scoring in the middle of the third.
