PhiladelphiaJustin Danforth scored the game-winning goal late in the third period and Elvis Merzlikins stopped 47 shots to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.

The win allowed the Blue Jackets to end a seven-game losing streak. Sean Kuraly completed the scoring in an empty net in the dying seconds of the game.

The last victory for the Jackets dates back to March 19. Since then, the team has seen its playoff hopes go up in smoke over the past three weeks.

The two teams excluded from the playoffs sent to the ice lineups filled with young prospects. It was an evening marked by premieres.

Brendan Gaunce scored his fifth of the season with the help of Carson Meyer, who collected his first NHL point before scoring his first goal in a 2-on-1 run with 6:37 remaining in the first period.

Noah Cates cut the deficit to 2-1 by also scoring his first career goal late in the first period. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2017 draft, but preferred to stay in university. He joined the Flyers after Minnesota-Duluth was eliminated last week.

Without the services of their top scorer, Jack Hughes, due to injury, the New Jersey Devils lost 3-1 Tuesday night to the New York Rangers.

Artemi Panarin provided two assists on two power-play goals in the first period. Chris Kreider put on his 47and goal of the season and Ryan Strome scored on his return as goalkeeper Alexandar Georgiev made 20 saves for a fifth straight win.

Defender Justin Braun, acquired at the trade deadline, scored his first goal in a Rangers uniform to double the Rangers lead.

Yegor Sharangovich was the only one to hit the target for the Devils. He opened the scoring at 6:56 of the first period. He stole the puck from Blue Shirts defender Jacob Trouba in his area before beating Georgiev with a backhand shot.

Three minutes later, Sharangovich battled with Braden Schneider after the latter hit Jesper Boqvist hard in front of the Devils bench. Sharangovich received 17 minutes of penalty for his gesture in addition to sustaining a cut to the head. He did not return to the game.

Nico Daws made 14 saves in net for the Devils.

The end for Hughes

Between the first and second periods, the Devils announced that Jack Hughes’ season was over with a left knee injury.

Hugues was the very first pick in the 2019 draft.

The young forward was injured last Sunday in the second period of the game against the New York Islanders when he was hit along the ramp by Oliver Wahlstrom. A medical examination revealed that Hughes suffered from a slight sprain in his left knee.

Due to this injury, he will miss the remainder of the season and will now begin a process of recovery and fitness.

The Devils will not make the playoffs. They occupy the 15and rank of the Eastern Association, ahead of the Montreal Canadiens.

Hughes had his best season so far in the National Hockey League with 26 goals and 30 assists for a total of 56 points in 49 games. He notably tallied 15 goals and 15 assists since the 1er last February.
