Tim Stutzle lets Senators crush Blue Jackets

Tim Stutzle had a goal and an assist as the Ottawa Senators shut out the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old center has eight points, including five goals, in his last six outings.

Derick Brassard, Drake Batherson and Austin Watson also moved the ropes for the Ottawa squad.

In his second straight start, Anton Forsberg was perfect on 22 shots and posted his second career NHL shutout.

Joonas Korpisalo stopped 33 shots for the Blue Jackets, who suffered their eighth straight loss at home.

Killorn and Hagel help the Lightning beat the Blackhawks 4-1

Alex Killorn broke the tie in the third period and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Brandon Hagel added a goal and an assist for the Lightning, which posted a fourth straight win and 11e in his last 14 games.

Pat Maroon and Nicholas Paul also blacked out the scoresheet for the Lightning as Brian Elliott made 25 saves.

Killorn was stopped by Alex Stalock on his first try, but he sent the return into the back of the net. This was his 12e countryside fillet.

Hagel took advantage of a power play to score his 15e goal of the season. It was his first game at the United Center in Chicago since being traded to the Lightning in March.

Seth Jones was the lone scorer for the Blackhawks, who lost a fifth straight game. They are 2-20-1 in their last 23 outings.

Stalock ended his work night with 25 saves.

Sam Gagner scores late in the third period to give the Jets the win

Sam Gagner deflected a Ville Heinola shot with 5:40 remaining in the third period and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 on Tuesday night.

More than two minutes after the Flames tied the game in the third period, Gagner scored his seventh goal of the season, deflecting a slap shot from the point of Heinola.

Brenden Dillon and Josh Morrissey also moved the ropes for the Jets, who begin a three-game stint at the Canada Life Centre.

Morrissey and Kyle Connor, who set up Morrissey’s goal, extended their home streak to nine.

Connor Hellebuyck blocked 33 pucks for the Manitoba squad, which posted a third straight victory after ending a three-game losing streak.

Nikita Zadorov and Mikael Backlund provided the reply for the Flames. Jacob Markstrom finished the matchup with 22 saves.

Rangers come from behind to halt Hurricanes’ winning streak

Artemi Panarin, K’Andre Miller and Filip Chytil scored in the third period and the New York Rangers came from behind to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Jacob Trouba and Mika Zibanejad also found the back of the net for the Rangers, who are 10-2-1 in their last 13 games.

Igor Shesterkin made 20 saves in the first meeting between the two teams since the Rangers eliminated the Hurricanes in the second round of the 2022 playoffs.

The Rangers took advantage of the duel to end the Hurricanes’ 11-game winning streak, which hadn’t lost in regulation since Nov. 23.

Jalen Charfield, Martin Necas and Brent Burns shone the red light for the North Carolina squad, which was 15-0-2 in its last 17 games.

Pyotr Kochetkov allowed four goals on 30 shots in a losing cause.

Sabers defeat Capitals in overtime

Tage Thompson completed his hat trick in overtime as the Buffalo Sabers defeated the Washington Capitals 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Thompson capitalized on a Capitals turnover in overtime and earned a fourth career hat trick.

Thompson, who reached 30 goals, also set the table for 18e net of Alex Tuch’s campaign. Tyson Jost also scored for the Sabers, who posted their seventh win in eight games.

Sabers goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 28 pucks in the win.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals, who have suffered only their third loss in their last 14 games. Sonny Milano and Nic Dowd also flashed the red light.

Luukkonen became the 167e NHL goaltender to be outplayed by Ovechkin. The Russian has completed his 27e and 28e goals of the campaign and he is just 86 goals away from equaling Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894.

Darcy Kuemper allowed five goals on 29 shots.

Matthew Tkachuk scores hat trick in Panthers win

Matthew Tkachuk (19) scored an early goal in the second period.

Matthew Tkachuk recorded his first hat trick as a member of the Florida Panthers, who defeated the Arizona Coyotes 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Tkachuk was acquired this summer from the Calgary Flames in exchange for forward Jonathan Huberdeau and defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. His third goal allowed him to reach the plateau of 20 goals this season.

Eric Staal also scored twice for the Panthers. Spencer Knight ended his two-game losing streak with 33 saves.

Jakob Chychrun, Clayton Keller and Nick Bjugstad replied for the Coyotes, who lost their second straight game. Karel Vejmelka blocked 32 shots.

Staal broke the tie in the second period and Tkachuk completed his hat trick just over three minutes later to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead.

Brayden Schenn helps Blues beat Maple Leafs in shootout

Brayden Schenn scored on the power play and in the shootout as the St. Louis Blues edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Schenn scored the game-clinching goal after Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich both beat Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov.

Brandon Saad hit the target twice while Jordan Kyrou and Josh Leivo added a goal each for the Blues.

Jordan Binnington stopped 20 shots in 65 minutes and added the win to his record.

Michael Bunting threaded the needle twice as Pierre Engvall, William Nylander and Auston Matthews all got a goal for the Maple Leafs.

Matthews was also involved in Nylander’s goal, collecting his 500e and 501e NHL career points.

Samsonov finished the game with 27 saves for the Torontonians.
