Phil Kessel doesn’t particularly like being the center of attention.
The Golden Knights Vegas forward, however, found himself in the limelight on Tuesday night.
After tying defenseman Keith Yandle for the longest streak in the NHL on Monday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the 17-year veteran snatched the record alone when he started a 990e consecutive game on Tuesday against the San Jose Sharks.
“It’s quite a pleasant event, that means I’ve played a lot of matches, right? “Kessel launched on Monday. ” It’s good. Obviously I was able to win a few Stanley Cups, so I guess it’s better than that streak. But tomorrow will be another fun game and I hope to come out on top. »
The two-time Stanley Cup champion said he would be happy to put this stage behind him and focus on the season, which he hopes will include a return to the playoffs. Last year, his former team, the Arizona Coyotes, and his new team, the Golden Knights, did not make the playoffs.
Kessel, who has 399 goals and 559 assists, played in 1,211 career games with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Coyotes and Golden Knights.
He is just one goal away from becoming the 13e American player to score 400 NHL goals.
Kessel acknowledged that there were days when he thought the streak would end, but he overcame many injuries and endured some pain while enjoying his time with all five teams, including his first few months with the Golden Knights.
“Nobody is ever 100% in this league. People think they are, but they’re not, he admitted. You still have sores and bruises and you don’t feel great. But you keep moving forward. »
