Brett Pesce plays heroes in overtime

Brett Pesce hit the target on a two-for-no comeback and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Tuesday night.

The Penguins forced overtime when a Jake Guentzel deflection with 58 seconds left in the game found its way into the net.

The Hurricanes, however, escaped with the victory when a favorable jump launched the breakaway with two players. Pesce closed the books with his second goal of the campaign.

Andrei Svechnikov and Martin Necas also moved the ropes for the Hurricanes, who posted a second straight win after going on a five-game losing streak.

Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 30 pucks for the North Carolina team.

Sidney Crosby also found the back of the net for the Penguins, who had to manage without the services of defenseman Kris Letang.

Tristan Jarry blocked 36 shots but was left to his own devices on the streak that led to Pesce’s game-winning goal.

Taylor Hall scored twice and the Boston Bruins bettered their own National League record for most consecutive home wins to start the season with a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night .

The Bruins have won their first 13 games in front of home fans this season. The old mark of 11 was first set by the Chicago Black Hawks in 1963-64, then equaled by the Florida Panthers last season.

On Friday night, the Bruins erased that record with a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime.

Against the Lightning on Tuesday, backup goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves and Brad Marchand added an empty-netter.

In the loss, Steven Stamkos scored a power play goal to bring his career total to 999.

Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy blocked 23 shots in front of the nets for the Lightning, who had won six of their previous seven games.

Hall netted the eventual winner at 2:49 of the third period, scoring from the slot after receiving a pass from Nick Foligno.

Hall had scored the game’s first goal after just 67 seconds, deflecting a Brandon Carlo shot from the blue line.

Stamkos tied the game with 1:40 left in the second period, using a one-timer after a pass from Nikita Kucherov.
