Tuesday in the NHL | Doubles for Matthews and Marner in a Maple Leafs victory

Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner scored doubles and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Rangers 7-3 on Tuesday.

Matthews added two assists. Conor Timmins, Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf also lit the red light for the Maple Leafs, who have not lost in regulation time in their last seven meetings (5-0-2).

The Maple Leafs led 4-1 after the first period, but the Rangers scored twice in the second to cut the deficit to one goal. Marner, however, scored his second of the evening on a power play in the third and the Maple Leafs added two more goals.

Blake Wheeler scored two goals and Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play for the Rangers, who lost for the third time in four outings.

Martin Jones made 28 saves in his first start with the Maple Leafs. He has been working as an assistant to Ilya Samsonov since Joseph Woll injured his ankle.

Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller was not in uniform for personal reasons. Zac Jones replaced him in the lineup.

Aho scores double in Hurricanes win over Senators

Sebastian Aho scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

Morning Necas and Seth Jarvis also scored, then Pyotr Kochetkov made 30 saves for the Hurricanes, who ended a four-game losing streak.

Josh Norris scored the lone goal for the Senators, who had won their previous three games. Joonas Korpisalo stopped 24 pucks.

The Senators will now play five of their next seven games on the road.

Brady Tkachuk earned a penalty shot when Kochetkov threw his stick to stop Drake Batherson on a breakaway in the third period. The goalie came forward to challenge Tkachuk, who did not appreciate the maneuver. The Senators captain informed Kochetkov, and he was kicked out of the game.

The Senators were shut out on four power play opportunities and were unable to find the back of the net on their last 18 opportunities in front of their fans.

Penguins beat Coyotes 4-2

Jeff Carter and Jake Guentzel each scored two goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 on Tuesday night.

The Penguins ended a drought of 37 scoreless power plays, finding the back of the net twice in this situation against the Coyotes. The streak had lasted for more than a month.

Guentzel scored the Penguins’ first power play goal in 31 days when he beat Connor Ingram early in the game. He also scored in an empty net to seal the outcome of the game.

Carter deflected Kristopher Letang’s point shot at 4:32 of the third period. The striker scored his first goal of the match shorthanded in the first period.

Tristan Jarry blocked 19 shots for the Penguins, who had lost their last four games.

Lawson Crouse scored his 13e goal of the campaign, in addition to obtaining an assist on the net from Matias Maccelli on the power play. Ingram made 40 saves.

Red Wings beat Blues 6-4

Robby Fabbri and Lucas Raymond scored in the third period to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.

Moritz Seider, Jake Walman, Jonatan Berggren and Michael Rasmussen also scored in the victory. The Red Wings had lost their last three games, going 0-2-1.

Kevin Hayes scored two goals for the Blues. Marco Scandella and Brandon Saad also found the back of the net. The Blues have lost four games in a row and five of their last six outings.

Jordan Binnington stopped 26 pucks for the Blues.

Raymond tied the game 4-4 on the power play just 48 seconds into the third period. Fabbri then gave his team a 5-4 lead at 6:38. Rasmussen completed the scoring with an empty-net goal at 18:21 of play.

Ville Husso stopped 33 shots for the Red Wings in his first game against the Blues since being traded by the team in July 2022.
