Tage Thompson scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the Buffalo Sabers’ 5-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Kyle Okposo, Jeff Skinner, Rasmus Dahlin and Rasmus Asplund, in an empty net, also scored for the Sabers (27-37-11). Alex Tuch and Victor Olofsson each had two assists.

Craig Anderson made 23 saves, which helped the Sabers win their series against the Maple Leafs this season 3-1-0.

Timothy Liljegren and Alexander Kerfoot sounded the charge for the Leafs (47-20-6). Morgan Rielly had two assists, bringing his total to 53 this season, a career high for the defenseman. Erik Kallgren stopped 23 shots.

Sabers defenseman Owen Power – the first overall pick of the 2021 draft – played in his first career NHL game. He signed a three-year contract last week.

NHL scoring leader Auston Matthews saw his 16-game point streak come to an end, as did his sidekick Mitch Marner and his 13-game streak.

Capitals easily beat Flyers 9-2

Lars Eller scored a brace.

Alexander Ovechkin scored a 46and goal on Tuesday, helping the Washington Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers 9-2.

Ovechkin scored in a fourth straight game as the Caps earned a fourth straight win.

Ovechkin has 776 career goals. Lars Eller scored a brace.

TJ Oshie, Martin Fehervary, Conor Sheary, Matthew Irwin, Garnet Hathaway and Johan Larsson were the other scorers for the winners.

James van Riemsdyk scored twice against Ilya Samsonov, who made 19 saves.

Carter Hart left after 20 minutes with a lower body injury. He gave up three times in 10 shots. Martin Jones was beaten six times on 27 shots.

The Capitals will play their next five road games starting Thursday in Toronto.

Blues edge Bruins 4-2

Vladimir Tarasenko flashed the red light twice and the St. Louis Blues came from behind to beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 on Tuesday.

Torey Krug and David Perron each finished with a goal and an assist for the Blues (43-20-10), which posted a sixth straight victory.

Ville Husso stopped 39 shots to win his fifth straight start. Robert Thomas got his 48and assist of the season, extending his one-point streak to 10.

The Bruins (45-23-5) have lost three of their last four meetings. Patrice Bergeron and Marc McLaughlin rocked the ropes for the Bruins.

Jeremy Swayman made 26 saves.

The Bruins defended well despite missing key cogs in the roster. These included right winger David Pastrnak (undisclosed injury) and defenders Matt Grzelcyk (upper body) and Hampus Lindholm (lower body).

The Bruins added defenseman Brandon Carlo to the list of cripples after he left the game just four minutes and 48 seconds into the game.
