Trump is the main danger to American democracy, says Biden

(Washington) President Joe Biden accused his opponent Donald Trump of representing the main threat to American democracy, in an interview broadcast Tuesday on the country’s main Spanish-language television channel.

Asked by the Univision journalist what, in his opinion, was “the main danger threatening freedom and democracy” in the United States, the Democratic president replied: “Donald Trump. Seriously. »

The president, who will face his predecessor in the November presidential election, cited in support of his statements the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Donald Trump supporters then violently tried to interrupt the certification of the election of Joe Biden by Congress, sowing, according to the latter, “disorder and destruction”.

The Democrat also criticized him for his remarks according to which he would behave like a “dictator” on the first day of a new mandate. He also recalled that Donald Trump had waited long hours on the day of the assault before calling on his supporters to calm down.

“I can’t think of any time in my life, in history, where we’ve seen this, someone with this kind of behavior,” Joe Biden said from the Oval Office.

The Republican billionaire, far from regretting the episode, greets in his rallies the “patriots” of the assault on the Capitol and says that he will pardon hundreds of people sentenced to prison for their actions that day.

This interview given by Joe Biden, which will be broadcast in full on Tuesday evening, is rare: the Democrat has given few interviews to the press since his arrival at the White House, much fewer than his predecessors.

Univision is the leading Spanish-language media outlet in the United States as the Hispanic electorate, historically favorable to the Democrats, leans more and more towards the Republicans.
