When you think he has reached the limit, he surpasses himself again.
Now Trump is not only saying that he is thinking about sabotaging NATO, but also that he could encourage Russia to attack its allies… by promising that the United States will never come to their aid.
And this, despite the Alliance’s commitments which stipulate the opposite – the famous Article 5 of NATO, according to which “an armed attack against one of the members […] is an attack directed against all its members. Under Trump II, this article would become obsolete… and NATO with it!
His precise words, supposed to relate a conversation held with counterparts under his presidency: “I would encourage [la Russie] to do whatever it wants” against “a country that has not paid its bills”. In vulgar terms, the mafia boss says to his “friends”: “If you don’t pay, I’ll call the enemy to kill you. »
Pure Trump. An allusion to the fact that certain members — at a time when NATO, de facto, was disarming and Europe believed in perpetual peace — had forgotten the promise to raise their military budget to 2% of GDP.
Contrary to the fables about the aggressiveness and the rise in power of a NATO “encircling” Russia, Putin had clearly seen, at the time of invading Ukraine, this continuous decline in military budgets in Europe (very well documented), inspired by the naive faith in a world where war would no longer exist.
Far from being inspired by the fear of an attack, Russian aggression in Ukraine was on the contrary a secret bet of Putin: the Europeans are asleep, pacifists for eternity, and they will never respond – beyond a few protests — to the imperialist invasion of Ukraine.
We know that things were different after February 2022, and that NATO received an electric shock, precisely thanks to Putin… Finland and Sweden joined the alliance, defense budgets increased: Poland, for example example, is 4% of GDP.
With fatigue helping, this momentum is however called into question in 2024. Perhaps new excesses à la Donald Trump will motivate some, especially since…

Especially as Russia’s allies are mobilizing in the United States, where the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) right – even in Congress in Washington, where the renewal of American aid to Ukraine is in danger – appears more and more openly pro-Russian. Witness: the adventures of Tucker Carlson in Moscow.
Carlson, star host of the MAGA right, was to his cost if he intended to make, during his two hours of interview with Putin, a new demonstration of his superb arrogance. He was beaten by the champion of all political machos, who buried him under a logorrhea of dates and names of kings, in a total rewriting of the history of Russia and its neighbors which do not exist. All accompanied by a few contemptuous barbs… which “Tucker”, despite being an ideological ally, did not expect.
You should have seen his totally bewildered look when the other took out Prince Riourik of Novgorod from his boxes (IXe century), as supposed proof of the non-existence of Ukraine!
Last August, the former Fox News star had already “served soup” to the Hungarian Viktor Orbán, friend of Putin, black sheep of the European Union, in a much more cordial interview, where the two exclaimed in unison: “Ah, it would be great if Trump became president again!” »
This superb Putinism, this servile drift of the American right, these European hesitations… should give pause to those for whom the evil in the world can only come from the United States, NATO, Zionism and capitalism.
With some figures for those who criticize militarism. Military spending by EU countries (2022): 1.5% of GDP. From the United States (2023): 3.5% of GDP, 12% of the federal budget.
From Russia (2024 projections): 6% of GDP, 30% of the federal budget. A third of Russian public spending… dedicated to war!
