The American presidential campaign has seen an unexpected twist with the expected candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris, following the withdrawal of President Joe Biden. But, above all, the end of this campaign will be marked by a dichotomy of candidacies, by two opponents who are completely different, both personally and ideologically.
On the one hand, Donald Trump, former tenant of the White House and well-known businessman, traditional archetype of the “American dream”, comes from an old, very wealthy Caucasian family from New York. Convicted of several charges, he is also supported by right-wing political movements transcended by religious orthodoxy and a blind faith in all-out deregulation, promising, among other things, during his possible next term, to “clean up the Washington swamp” as well as the political and judicial institutions that he considers corrupt.
On the other hand, Kamala Harris, almost 20 years his junior, was attorney general of California and a Democratic senator in the United States Congress. She is the child of a Jamaican father, an economist emeritus at Stanford University, and an Indian mother, a research biologist who immigrated to the country. She positions herself as progressive, particularly on the issues of abortion and environmental protection.
Two candidates who are complete opposites, real enemies, who perfectly represent the political polarization of a divided nation: the right against the left; the past against the future; the old business elite against the new generation of children of immigrants who have succeeded in public institutions. Not to mention the ethnic and gender differences… never before seen in the presidential election in the country of Uncle Sam.
