On social networks, more and more young children are reproducing the gestures of adult beauty influencers in videos. Why is this practice dangerous?

They are less than fourteen years old and have already mastered the codes of beauty influencers. On social networks, videos of young girls putting on makeup have millions of views. These young influencers are called the “Sephora Kids“. Pre-teen girls addicted to beauty products who rob the store’s shelves. The phenomenon was popularized in the United States, notably by the 10-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Now the trend is spreading in France.

Risks for children’s skin and mental health

Mothers in France are worried about the phenomenon. Concealers, anti-aging serums and firming creams are particularly popular with these young girls. “A child’s skin is different from an adult’s skin“, says Marie Jourdan, dermatologist. These products are unsuitable according to her, because children’s skin is more fragile. In the worst cases, they can cause irritation.

According to psychoanalyst Michaël Stora, they are looking for an image of perfection conveyed by social networks. “This is what we call the quest for self-image (…) the child finds himself playing a role every day“, specifies the expert in digital practices.
