COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is chaired by the controversial Sultan al-Jaber. Present on the set of 19/20 info, Friday December 1, the journalist at the “True or false” cell of franceinfo Louis Augry returns to the profile of the Sultan.

Sultan al Jaber chairs COP28 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). A man with a controversial profile, as explained by the journalist in the “True or false” cell of franceinfo Louis Augry, present on the set of 19/20, Friday December 1st. “There is above all a reason for this, it is the double hat of Sultan al-Jaber. He is both president of COP28 and director of Adnoc, the main oil company in the United Arab Emirates”indicates the journalist. “Obviously, the question arises of possible conflicts of interest, of a sort of double game. His appointment was widely criticized on the international scene by the main environmental defense organizations”adds Louis Augry.

A compromising BBC investigation

The journalist recalls that on the eve of the opening of COP28, the BBC published an investigation which reveals that Sultan al Jaber’s teams would have organized, on the sidelines of the climate conference, several meetings to conclude oil deals and gas workers. Sultan al Jaber assured that these allegations are false. “We can say that this investigation clearly adds fuel to the speeches of Sultan al Jaber’s detractors”indicates Louis Augry.

Sultan al Jaber’s team has been trying to improve its image in recent times. Thus, last June, a team from the Center for climate reporting revealed certain attempts by the latter to greenwash its image on the internet. For example, on Wikipedia, some users attempted to edit elements of the biography of Sultan al Jaber.
