Against the European Union and the standards of Brussels (Belgium), the National Rally (RN) claims to be the main defender of small farmers and French rurality. But do the votes and the party program go in the direction of defending local agriculture and small farms?

In 2021, the European deputies of the National Rally (RN) vote in favor of the common agricultural policy (CAP), of which France is today one of the main beneficiaries. This is aid for which the party had criticized, in the past, the unequal distribution between farmers. “A huge movement of concentration in the hands of large farms to the detriment of small family farms, which are at the heart of our French agricultural model”declared Marine Le Pen in 2017.

But since then, RN MEPs have rejected the proposals to cap CAP aid. A measure which could, however, have brought about a better redistribution of this aid and thus benefited the smallest farms. In its program, the RN today places emphasis on organic and localism. A “Let’s eat French” law for Jordan Bardella and a support plan for organic farming for Marine Le Pen. However, when an amendment to the Assembly proposes to support the organic sector in times of crisis, the RN abstains. The RN’s strategy is struggling, in any case, to convince the main stakeholders. According to a latest poll for Europeans, farmers would vote less for the party than all French people.
