For certain members of France Insoumise, Israel respects international law less than Russia. True or false ?
After examining the resolutions of the UN Security Council, the name of Israel appears in 229 resolutions since the creation of the Jewish state in 1948. Most condemn Israeli military actions, particularly in Palestinian territory. So are these resolutions, as Manuel Bompard, coordinator of France Insoumise, says, systematically violated by Israel? The UN cannot, in any case, force States to apply these resolutions to the letter. They are therefore, on the whole, very little followed by the facts.
Russia has a permanent headquarters
On March 25, for example, the UN Security Council issued a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan. The text was voted on but was not applied. On the Security Council website, there are much fewer texts against Russia and the USSR, before it, than against Israel. This does not necessarily mean that Russia respects international law more; it has an advantage over Israel, since it has a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, and therefore a right of veto on resolutions voted on. Israel has been targeted more but that does not mean that it respects international law any less.
