In the midst of controversy over public schools following comments made by the Minister of National Education, inequalities in resources between schools are being singled out.
President of the La France insoumise (LFI) group in the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot denounced the differences in allocations between the colleges of Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis at the microphone of BFMTV on January 16. The elected representative refers to a parliamentary report dating from 2018. It mentions the differences in resources between educational establishments. An indicator makes it possible to compare the allocations granted to the colleges of Paris and the colleges of Seine-Saint-Denis: the number of hours of weekly teaching per student. The higher it is, the greater the resources granted by National Education.
Similar endowments and persistent inequalities
For the current school year, the allocations between the two zones are similar, with 1,311 hours of weekly teaching per student in Paris compared to 1,307 in Seine-Saint-Denis. However, endowments should be stronger when social inequalities persist, according to Elise Huillery, professor of economics at Paris Dauphine University.
