According to Aymeric Caron, children who live near a nuclear power plant are more at risk of developing leukemia. Is this statement correct?

During a commission on nuclear power, the deputy NUPES Aymeric Caron assured that the plants increase the risk of leukemia for children who live nearby. It stated: “This 2012 INSERM study evokes a higher number of childhood leukemias than the national average within a radius of 5 kilometers around the power plants.“He was then taken over by RN deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy, who assured that”This study says the exact opposite. So what does this INSERM study really say?

Additional analyzes needed

According to FranceInfo, the two elected officials only retain what suits them. The study in question concludes that 14 cases of leukemia have been counted among children living less than 5 km from a power plant. That’s twice the average. For the researchers, the results thus suggest a possibly higher risk.

Aymeric Caron is therefore right on this point. But what he does not mention is that the study did not establish a clear link between nuclear power plants and leukemia. It is well written:This association may not be caused by power plant emissions.“Jean-Philippe Tanguy is therefore right on this aspect. The authors of the study conclude that additional analyzes are necessary, for example in other countries.
