Troyes serves as the setting for the filming of the first part of “The Three Musketeers”

After Paris, Saint-Malo or Beaune, it is the turn of the city of Troyes, in Aube, to serve as a backdrop for the adaptation of a diptych of Three Musketeers – D’Artagnan and The Three Musketeers – Milady based on the work of Alexandre Dumas.

The shooting of the French blockbuster directed by Martin Bourboulon (Mom or Dad, eiffel) continues in the city of Tricasse.

With its half-timbered houses and narrow medieval streets, Troyes is adorned with 16th century attire. About twenty carpenters and painters are busy in the town centre. The assistant manager Mathieu Avolio explains how the fine team comes to hide the elements of modernity, gutter or intercoms. “We have small boxes which will be patinated and which will cover the elements”, he details.

Half-timbered, cobblestones and the charm of the old, this street but also the Maison de l’Outil and the Workers’ Thought will serve as a backdrop. “In 2017, we had already hosted the filming of“A people and their king” and after that, I had the Maison de l’Outil listed in the directory of historic filming locations”says Christophe Cheutin, director of the Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière.

One of the rooms in the Museum of Fine Arts was emptied of its display cases in anticipation of filming and the windows of the magnificent 16th century building were harmonized in the 17th century. “Here the courtyard will be fully accessorized, furnished, there will be carts, animals and up to a hundred extras in costumes”, further details Mathieu Avolio.

For this new adaptation of Three Musketeers, Martin Bourboulon saw things on a grand scale. In the cast of this French blockbuster, we find François Civil in the role of d’Artagnan. Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï and Romain Duris encamp the other musketeers. Eva Green plays Milady and the actor and member of the Comédie Française Éric Ruf put on the clothes of Cardinal de Richelieu.

The work of Alexandre Dumas has already inspired many adaptations or original works for the big screen, in France and in Hollywood. By Gérard Depardieu and John Malkovich in The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) to Philippe Noiret and Claude Rich in d’Artagnan’s daughter by Bertrand Tavernier (1994), prestigious actors have rubbed shoulders with it. Across the Atlantic, an adaptation by George Sidney brought together Gene Kelly and Lana Turner in 1948.

For this new coup d’épée, the adaptation of the text was entrusted to Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière, known for their theater comedies, and in particular for First name.

Two components are already planned, D’Artagnan and Miladywhich will be shot simultaneously in France for a budget of 60 million euros, said Pathé. The result will be to discover on screens in early 2023.
