Thirty years later, the pain remains acute for the victims of the Furiani tragedy. The island of Corsica paid tribute for what remains today the worst disaster in French sport.
This May 5, 2022, flowers are laid in front of a monument in memory of the victims near the sstage of Furiani. “It’s a lot of emotion, a lot of sadness. Besides that, it’s also a lot of joy to see so many people”. Karine Grimaldi lost her younger sister on May 5, 1992. If she survived, she nevertheless became a quadriplegic. “Even after 30 years we realize that people do not forget, are present and support us”she concludes.
On May 5, 1992, FC Bastia received Olympique de Marseille for the semi-final of the Coupe de France. A stand is built for the occasion to double the capacity of the stadium. While the atmosphere is festive, the grandstand collapses and hundreds of people fall from a height of 15m. The toll is heavy: 19 dead and more than 2,300 injured. Only the builder of the stand will be sentenced to two years in prison.
