The judge reminded jurors that they should only consider evidence that was presented in the courtroom during the trial. He asked them to do their jobs in a “fair” and “impartial” manner.

The 38-year-old is charged with second degree murder and forcible confinement of the seven-year-old girl. The judge also opened the door to a charge of manslaughter, a less serious charge than second degree murder in the Criminal Code.

The magistrate will continue reading his directives on Thursday.

Note that one of the 14 members of the jury was dismissed on Wednesday morning because he was in contact with a positive case of COVID-19.
