Tuesday, November 28, the organizers of the banned March 25 demonstration are once again in court. They are accused of damage and theft, committed on the sidelines of a mobilization against the megabasins of Sainte-Soline, in Deux-Sèvres.

Clashes of rare violence between gendarmes and environmental activists… On March 25, in Deux-Sèvres, the banned demonstration against agricultural water retention basins turned into a fistfight. Nine leaders of environmental associations and unions are summoned to court. The first time was on September 8, thousands of people came to support the eight accused. However, after 8 hours of debate, the court suspended the hearing and postponed it to November 28.

Demonstrations deemed “vital” by organizers

At the Niort courthouse (Deux-Sèvres), the defendants will once again challenge the indictments. “We are going to be in court for something absurd, which should not exist. (…) What is absolutely problematic is to prohibit these demonstrations which are absolutely vital, essential“, assures one of the defendants. Some organizers of the demonstration must answer for theft or damage. Those accused face up to six months of imprisonment and a fine of 7,500 euros.
