Suspected of “embezzlement of public funds”, the president and founder of the centrist party was finally exonerated with the benefit of the doubt, Monday February 5, in the affair of the European parliamentary assistants. On the other hand, five former MEPs were given suspended prison sentences.

The leader of the centrist MoDem party and mayor of Pau, François Bayrou, was exonerated with the benefit of the doubt in the affair of European parliamentary assistantss, Monday February 5. In 2017, the affair caused the resignation of the president of MoDem from the government. “The court said, not only that I was not involved in this case, but that there was no system, that there was no personal enrichment”explained François Bayrou.

“A nightmare of seven years”

The leader of the centrists showed his relief after “a nightmare of seven years which has just ended”. The Paris judicial court nevertheless sentenced eight members of the MoDem, including five former European deputies, to suspended prison sentences and ineligibility, as well as fines of 10,000 to 50,000 euros.
