Trial of European parliamentary assistants: François Bayrou acquitted – (France info)

François Bayrou was acquitted in the parliamentary assistants affair on Monday February 5. He risked 3 years in prison and 3 years of ineligibility. 5 former MEPs receive suspended prison sentences.

Prosecutors had requested 3 years of ineligibility and 3 years of suspended prison sentence against the leader of the MoDem, François Bayrou, in the case of the parliamentary assistants of his party. At the Paris judicial court, Monday February 5, five former MEPs received suspended prison sentences but François Bayrou was released with the benefit of the doubt. “What satisfies me is that the proof has been provided and that no, there was no desire (…) to misappropriate funds from the European Parliament”indicated the head of MoDem and mayor of Pau.

Complicity in embezzlement of public funds

With François Bayrou, there were ten executives and elected officials from the centrist party to be prosecuted for complicity in embezzlement of public funds. The courts accused them of having made their parliamentary assistants, paid by European funds, work between 2005 and 2012, for damages of 293,000 euros.
