When his first album was released, Family Portrait, British composer and DJ Felix Clary Weatherall was already the spearhead of successful lo-fi house underground of its composition Talk to Me You’ll Understand (2015). Tread, his second album for Brainfeeder, sees him continue his exploration of various musical styles (Clams Casino-style hip-hop on Spatter / Splatter, astonishing deconstruction of classic soul on A Brand New Start, ambient on Morning Sun in a Dusty Room) through a process of studio improvisations recorded using music creation software that he designed himself. It makes for a busty, bushy and disheveled record – a good thing considering that his musical references, inspired by the district of south London where he lives, sometimes turn out to be a little too similar to those of Jamie XX, Four Tet and Floating Points when it swings the jerky rhythms of the 2-step / UK garage (on The Daisy in opening, on Love divide, Life in a Mind towards the end).
