(Cromwell) World number 1 Scottie Scheffler beat South Korean Tom Kim on the first overtime hole at the Travelers Championship on Sunday, earning a sixth victory in 2024.
This is the most successful campaign at the PGA since 2009, when Tiger Woods also won on six occasions.
The reigning Masters Champion, Scheffler shot 65 for 268, 22 under.
After a five-minute interruption at 18e (police tackled intruders who sprinkled powder on the green), Scheffler narrowly missed a 26-foot putt.
He made a par, after which Kim joined him at the top by sinking a 10-foot putt for birdie.
After the incident involving the intruders, the flag was moved to an unaffected location on the 18th greene.
Scheffler lodged his approach shot to 11 feet, while Kim found himself in a sand trap. Scheffler secured his victory two putts later.
Scheffler arrived at the tournament after a 41e place at the United States Open, by far his worst result of the season.
He was three shots behind Kim after the first round, two shots behind him after two rounds and just one shot behind him entering the final round.
Scheffler and Kim celebrated a birthday on Friday – Scheffler turned 28 and Kim 22.
Residents of the Dallas area, they gathered at a New Haven restaurant to eat pizza before the tournament.
Tom Hoge and Sungjae Im finished at 260 after cards of 62 and 66, respectively. Hoge recorded nine birdies.
The best Canadian was Adam Svensson at 16e rank at minus 14, after a 68.
