Travel | Ottawa recommendations create confusion

COVID-19 variants, quarantine rules, testing and changing authorities’ recommendations are confusing Canadian travelers.

Marty Firestone, the boss of Travel Secure, a travel insurance firm, travelers do not know what to do with mandatory airport testing and quarantines, not to mention other measures adopted in other countries.

Many clients change destination or simply cancel their vacation plan, out of exasperation.

Air Transport Association of Canada CEO John McKenna calls on the federal government to better communicate its direction as thousands of Canadians cancel their trips.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said on Friday that travelers should expect delays at airports. He added that the situation could get worse.

The government does not recommend avoiding non-essential flights abroad, as it did until October 21, but warns Canadians “to be extra careful”. The Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been identified in more than 50 countries.
