On Wednesday February 28 in Tirana (Albania), Ukrainian President Zelensky met his Moldovan counterpart. At the same time, in Transnistria, a separatist region of Moldova, pro-Russian deputies asked for protection from Moscow. They denounce increasing pressure from the Moldovan state. Washington says it is monitoring the situation carefully.
Moscow overwhelms NATO
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, assures that the country supports “firmly maintains the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova within its borders”. For Moscow, it’s all NATO’s fault, which “insists in transforming the Republic of Transnistria into a second Ukraine”. Transnistria, a Russian-speaking region of 1.5 million inhabitants, proclaimed itself independent from Moldova in 1991. Its independence is recognized neither by the United Nations nor by Russia. 2,000 Russian soldiers have been deployed there for 30 years, officially a peacekeeping force. The latest statements by pro-Russian MPs from Transnistria worry many Moldovans.
