Transhumance began in the heart of the Pyrenees, in order to bring the herds down from the mountain pastures. For some shepherds, it is a long journey that has begun, as for a young shepherd whom the 13 Hours followed, and who traveled more than 300 km.
It’s the attraction of the day in the streets of Saint-Justin (moors) : the traditional transhumance which marks the end of summer. Txomin Iriberri must clear a way for his 350 sheep. This transhumance route was created by his father, now retired, 22 years ago. Today, the young shepherd takes over. A centuries-old cultural heritage, often joined by many walkers in the last kilometres. The day’s stage ends in the village square for the herd.
For the shepherd, a second day begins when the herd arrives in the village square. The shepherd indeed sells organic cheeses that he makes himself on the farm. Leaving on September 4 from Lac d’estaing (Hautes-Pyrenees)the shepherd and his flock should complete their journey on Sunday, September 25, after more than 300 km.
