(New York) Elon Musk announced Tuesday on X that he would move the headquarters of the aerospace company SpaceX and the social network X to Texas, in protest of the passage of a law on transgender students, enacted Monday in California.
“This is the last straw,” wrote the entrepreneur, justifying his decision by citing this text “and many others that preceded it” and which “attack families and businesses.”
The text, signed into law Monday by California Governor Gavin Newsom, aims to protect the rights of transgender students and combat discrimination.
In particular, it prohibits school staff from disclosing to anyone information about a student’s sexual orientation or gender identity without the prior consent of the person concerned.
This ban also applies to the student’s parents.
“A year ago, I made it clear to Governor Newsom that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children,” Musk said.
SpaceX is currently headquartered in Hawthorne, and X is headquartered in San Francisco.
The first will be moved to Starbase, a SpaceX industrial complex located near Brownsville, in the far southeast of Texas, Elon Musk said.
As for X, it will be relocated to Austin, where Tesla’s headquarters are already located, having moved from California in 2021.
At the time, Elon Musk cited California legislation and the preventive measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic by Gavin Newsom to justify his decision.
