Transforming old fruits and vegetables, the Touraine Food Bank’s anti-waste project

This Sunday, September 18, the Touraine Food Bank is organizing a garage sale for the second time, one of the aims of which is to finance your food processing workshop. An ambitious project estimated at nearly 1.1 million euros which will make it possible to fight against food waste and offer more products to the 20,000 beneficiaries of the Food Bank in Indre-et-Loire.

8 tonnes of food thrown away in 2021

The establishment of this workshop becomes essential in a period of high demand with the association. “In 2021 we collected nearly 1,500 tonnes of food, but we had to throw away eight tonnes”deplores the president of the Food Bank Jean-Paul Baunez. “For example, a punnet of strawberries given in the middle of summer: the next day, it’s full of juice at the bottom and therefore impossible to give away. With the workshop, it could be transformed into jam!”

Transform damaged fruit into jam or compote, vegetables into soup, cut large pieces of meat into small portions… “to expand our offer” explains Jean-Paul Baunez, while beneficiaries increase (nearly 9% more with the pandemic) and that donations stagnate in 2022 “because of the decline in purchasing power.”
