The German SNCF has launched a monthly ticket at 9 euros, which allows unlimited travel on all regional trains. But this commercial offer is a victim of its own success.
A crowd of passengers found themselves stranded on the platforms in Germany, for lack of space in the trains, after the launch of a new offer: a monthly ticket of 9 euros, for unlimited travel on all regional trains. “This lack of organization is a disaster”, comments a traveler. Consequently, the trains are crowded and the delays accumulate. “I stayed up for 3h30. My son too. To get back, we were compressed inside”testifies a father.
The government’s initiative aims to encourage people to take public transport in the face of soaring fuel prices. On weekends, the trains to the sea are taken by storm. The ticket to go to a posh seaside resort in the country, usually sold for more than 100 euros, is now accessible to as many people as possible. Within a few weeks, around 10 million €9 tickets were sold in Germany. The number of trains has not increased. Faced with demand, the German railways have announced the mobilization of more trains and staff during the summer.
