Monday March 25, train ticket prices have already started to soar. For a La Baule-Paris TGV in mid-July, the seat cost 57 euros when sales opened on March 13. A week later, it is 91 euros. Another example, for a Paris-Arcachon at the end of July, the ticket went from 69 euros when sales opened, to 132 euros on March 25, an increase of 91%.
Destinations up 30% over one year
The clock is ticking and prices are rising, enough to chill some travelers. “It’s huge, it’s more than double, it’s a lot”deplores a woman. “It’s complicated to pay for a train ticket for a family of four”, assures another traveler. Over the past year, TGV prices have soared, particularly for the South-West. According to a comparator, a Paris-Bordeaux in July-August increased by 29.55% on average over one year. For a Paris-Toulouse, we see an increase of 30%.
Travelers’ anticipation is not the only explanation for this phenomenon. “The first factor which explains this increase is the SNCF price increase, and the second, the train occupancy rate”, explains Victor Bertho, spokesperson for the Kombo search engine.
