To fight against the scourge of shoplifting, retailers are deciding to display the photo of suspected thieves on their shelves. A practice supported by an association, but which is not yet legal.

Among the hygiene products, between moisturizer and deodorants, a pharmacist chose to display the photo of an individual she accuses of theft, right in the middle of the aisle. “I posted this thief in terms of the products he stole, so that if he comes back (…) he will be seen and he will not want to take back products”explains Ibticem Naggoudi, pharmacist.

Exasperated by the repeated thefts, which cost her more than 20,000 euros each year, the young woman displayed around ten suspected thieves on her stalls to dissuade, but also to provoke a reaction. “It works”assures Ibticem Naggoudi, who specifies: “For several days I have not seen any thefts, and quite a few people stop in front of these posters and are completely aware.”

Up to 45,000 euros fine

Every day, video surveillance cameras capture dozens of thefts in many stores. Faced with the anger of traders, Ras-le-vol, the association behind this initiative wishes to move the lines. A MoDem deputy intends to table a bill to authorize these displays. For his part, a lawyer warns that this is an attack on the presumption of innocence. The practice is currently punishable by one year of imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros.
