Track Cycling | Canadian Kelsey Mitchell Eliminated in Quarter-Finals

(Paris) The reigning Olympic track cycling champion, Canadian Kelsey Mitchell, has been eliminated from the Paris Games.


The 30-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta., was defeated by Germany’s Lea Friedrich in the women’s sprint quarterfinals on Saturday at the National Velodrome.

Friedrich won the first race by 0.217 seconds and the second by 0.052.

Mitchell started the day with a loss to New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrew in the round of 16 before winning her repechage race to advance to the next round.

In addition, in the American men’s race, Canada ranked 13th.e out of 15. Portugal won gold ahead of Italy and Denmark.

Three Canadians will take to the track on Sunday, the final day of competition at the Paris Games. Maggie Coles-Lyster will compete in the women’s omnium, while James Hedgcock and Nick Wammes will compete in the men’s keirin.
