Is the audiovisual license living its last days? Emmanuel Macron proposed, Monday, March 7, to delete it if he were re-elected president. How then would public radio and television be financed?
The contribution to public broadcasting finances France Televisions, Radio France, Arte or even France 24. Emmanuel Macron, if re-elected, would like to abolish this tax. It amounts to 138 euros per year, and concerns 27.6 million households. In 2020, it brought in 3.8 billion euros. Valérie Pécresse and Marine Le Pen also want to abolish this tax, just like Éric Zemmour, who even wants to privatize public broadcasting.
Yannick Jadot sees Emmanuel Macron’s announcement as demagoguery. “That the President of the Republic has found common ground with the far right on such royalties, that says a lot about the vision he has of public service”, believes the candidate (Ecologist Pole) in the presidential election. The majority defends, and assumes a measure of consistency to lower purchasing power. For Julia Cagé, professor of economics at Sciences Po Paris and specialist in political economy, “we put the audiovisual sector in the hands of the goodwill of the State, and therefore we reduce its independence”.
