The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, opened the door to supervision of State Medical Aid, known as AME. This subject divides even within the majority. Explanations.

After the regularization of undocumented immigrants, this time, medical care intended for foreigners divides the majority up to the government. Will State Medical Aid (AME) be abolished? Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior, recommends it. He proposes restricting this overall aid to emergency care only. “We need humanity, of course, but firmness in matters of migration. Yes to emergency care, no to general care”argues the minister.

A division within the government

To clarify the government’s line, the Prime Minister has just launched a mission for possible adaptations, that is to say a modification of the care provided. Even before his conclusions, Tuesday October 10, Olivier Véran made a dissonant voice heard. “I have a real disagreement with Gérald Darmanin on this subject”he admitted.

Established in 2000 by Lionel Jospin, AME is comprehensive health coverage granted to foreigners in an irregular situation. It concerns 415,000 people per year at a cost of 1.4 billion euros. One month before the debate on immigration, Gérald Darmanin is seeking compromises with the right, which has doubts. The left maintains that the AME is a measure of justice and public health.
