Turnstiles that will subsequently allow the payment of a transport ticket by credit card are gradually being installed in Montreal metro stations, confirmed the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) on Monday on Twitter.
These new turnstiles and gates, which can already be seen at the Berri-UQAM station, are compatible with NFC technology, which allows, among other things, contactless payments by credit card or telephone.

In response to a question from a user who was inquiring about the possible possibility of holding his OPUS card on his phone, the STM confirmed that “the orientation chosen aims to allow electronic wallets”. The technology needed to make this possible, however, is not yet in place and is part of a “project carried out on a metropolitan scale via the ARTM”. The STM did not specify how long this technology should be in place.
The gradual deployment of the new turnstiles should take place over “about a year”, according to the organization.
New machines used to validate tickets were installed in the buses of the network in the spring and summer of 2021. These validators are also located at the rear doors of the articulated buses. They should also allow payment by credit card when the required technology is put in place, says the STM.
