Immunosuppressed people will soon no longer be the only ones to have access to antivirals against COVID-19 in Quebec, Health Minister Christian Dubé said on Friday. The latter, however, did not specify which groups will benefit from this expanded access.
The government decided to expand access to treatment after finding that the number of people claiming it fell short of available supplies.
Quebec currently receives 1,500 treatments per week, a number that should increase to 4,000 as of April.
On January 19, the Minister announced that Paxlovid would be offered as a priority to people with weakened immune systems.
On Friday, Mr. Dubé said he was awaiting directives from the National Institute of Excellence in Health and Social Services (INESSS) on the new groups to be prioritized for access to treatment.
He made these remarks as part of an interpellation in Parliament on the management of the pandemic. This exercise, which lasts two hours, allows opposition MNAs to question a minister on the subject of their choice. This inquiry was initiated by Liberal MP and health critic Monsef Derraji.
