While inflation worsens in France, with +6.1% in July, Total and Engie have published their results. Driven by soaring energy prices linked to the war in Ukraine, they are posting record gains. Enough to relaunch the debate on the taxation of superprofits, a measure rejected by the deputies last weekend.
Buoyed by soaring energy prices, they reaped record profits. Since the beginning of the year, TotalEnergies, cis more than 10 billion euros and for Engie 5 billion euros. As consumer bills rise, should these companies be taxed? The idea was rejected by the National Assembly. But the debate is revived. Insubordinate France is in favor of it.
In Europe, some countries are already charging the energy giants. In Italy, there is a 25% tax on windfall profits made by these companies. In the United Kingdom, this 25% tax applies to oil and gas companies. In Spain, it is under discussion, with a tax extended to banks. In France, the government has put pressure on large groups to make efforts, such as reductions at the pump until the end of the year for Total, 100 euros on average granted by Engie to its beneficiary customers of the energy check. For Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy, aid is preferable to taxes, but Olivia Grégoire, the Minister Delegate in charge of SMEs, leaves the door open, Friday July 29 in the morning.
