In France, mutuals cover your health expenses but they are more and more expensive, with an increase of 3% this year, according to a federation, and even 7% to 10% more for independent mutuals. “When you have average salaries, it makes a hell of a hole in the budget”, underlines an insured questioned. Others explain keeping it in spite of everything. “Tomorrow, you never know: I have a dental problem or whatever, I can do it with my mutual and I will pay less”, explains a passer-by.

Mutuals explain these increases by catching up on care not provided during confinement. In 2021, consultations explode, especially among dentists (+ 50%) or for hearing aids, doubled. There have been no big increases in optical care. Last year, half of the mutuals had already increased their rates by almost 3%.
