Saturday, June 11, France and Australia have found a compromise, following the broken contract for the purchase of French submarines by Australia. Australia undertakes to pay 555 million euros to the French company Naval Group.
The submarine crisis, which has poisoned relations between France and Australia for nine months, may have just ended on Saturday June 11. An order of 56 billion euros had been placed by Australia for the construction of French submarines, before being denied in September 2021. In order to compensate France, Australia will pay 555 million euros to Naval Group. This sum will make it possible to reimburse the expenses incurred by the French company in the first phases of the project.
With this compromise, the new Australian Prime Minister hopes to renew the dialogue. “I consider that a meeting with President Macron, in France, is absolutely essential to restore this relationship.”said Anthony Albanese, Australian Prime Minister. Following the breach of contract, Emmanuel Macron accused former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison of deception.
