towards a tax “probably” extended from 2024

The idea is gaining ground within the government, and the Minister of Transport does not rule out such a device.

While commando operations to deflate the tires of large cars are multiplying in large cities, is Clément Beaune sending a message to urban environmental vigilantes? The minister sees no harm in being called “mad taxman“. Clément Beaune believes that the weight of cars should be better taken into account in the future for simple ecological reasons.

From 1.8 tonnes (ie very few vehicles concerned), new thermal cars are subject to a purchase tax (€10/kg above 1.8 tonnes). And this application threshold “will be lowered gradually and probably from the finance bill for 2024“, declared Clément Beaune during the RTL-Le Figaro-LCI Grand Jury.

It is this form of auto malus that could be extended. How ? Quite simply by lowering the weight from which the tax would apply. For the moment, no details are given, the minister is only launching what is called a trial balloon. We diffuse the idea without detailing, and we wait for the reactions. But the principle is indeed in the pipes.

The Minister’s Arguments

The heavier a vehicle is, the more materials it contains and the more energy it consumes to move… which naturally increases CO2 emissions and therefore global warming. “You have to be consistent” assures Clément Beaune. “We are in a transition phase and the weight criteria should be taken into account”adds the promoter of the electric car.

If passed, the project could most likely come to fruition in the next 2024 budget. Next year’s finance bill is in the preparatory phase. It remains to be seen whether the increase in the penalty for heavy cars will also affect electric cars. Clément Beaune assures us that no, at least for the 2024 budget… After that, we’ll see. We are not going to shoot ourselves in the foot when it is necessary to encourage the clean car, but the minister insists: the meaning of history is to develop the electric vehicle rather small, medium and not too expensive. To good builder, hi.
