France could soon run out of canned and frozen vegetables. Industrialists in the sector are particularly worried about peas and green beans.

What if consumers of frozen and canned peas and green beans were deprived of them next spring? This is what producers fear. In a processing plant, 400 employees are in the process of packaging frozen green beans. Here, 25,000 tonnes of green beans and 12,000 peas are produced each year.

The French are consuming more green vegetables since confinement. Bad news: in 2021, the bad weather and the disappointing harvests worry manufacturers. “We do not have the possibility of producing new green beans before the 2022 campaign, which will begin in June. We will have to live with the stocks that we have today in our freezers”, says Olivier Morel, CEO of Gelacri.

Green vegetables could also be lacking as more and more farmers turn away from them. Some prefer to grow more wheat, the price of which is soaring. Next spring, there could be 5% green beans and up to 10% peas for canned and frozen food.
