Towards a resumption of traffic on the St. Lawrence Seaway

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation announced that ships should begin circulating Monday morning after reaching an agreement in principle with the Unifor union to end the workers’ strike that has paralyzed the system.

The company says workers will return to work starting at 7 a.m. Monday morning.

The agreement in principle, which has yet to be ratified, puts an end to a strike that began on October 22.

Pressure tactics carried out by the 360 workers represented by Unifor stopped the movement of ships in the main trade corridor.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available, but it is known that the union was fighting for higher wages to cope with the rising cost of living.

Remember that the premiers of Ontario and Quebec had asked Ottawa to intervene if federally mediated talks failed to quickly end the walkout.
