The World Health Organization (WHO) considers that an end to the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe is plausible with the Omicron variant, even if caution remains in order.
Will collective immunity against Covid-19 soon be reached in Europe? The Omicron variant could have infected 60% of the European population by March. The World Health Organization (WHO) assumes that the pandemic may soon be over. With immunity achieved due to infection or the vaccine, Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, predicts “a period of calm before perhaps the return of Covid-19 towards the end of the year but not necessarily the return of the pandemic”.
130 million Europeans have officially contracted the virus since the start of the pandemic and more than 1.7 million people have died from it. The Omicron wave continues to spread in Europe, so the WHO Europe director still encourages getting vaccinated against Covid-19. He also insists that the virus has taken scientists by surprise more than once, so caution should be exercised.
