Who from Recep Tayyip Erdoğan or Kemal Kiliçdaroglu will be the future president of Turkey? The Turks are called to the polls, Sunday, May 14, for a vote which promises to be decisive for the future of the country.

It is barely 9 a.m. on Sunday May 14, but the two-storey corridors of a school in Istanbul (Turkey) are already full. “I’m happy, so excited, like all Turks. I hope democracy will win”, says a woman. In every classroom, near every ballot box, observatories monitor a crucial ballot for Turkey.

Two visions collide

Face to face, two visions: the Islamo-nationalist one of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, 69, who if re-elected will strengthen his power, which has become authoritarian. And that of Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, 74, more secular, who promises more power in Parliament and a loosened grip on society. If Erdoğan is weakened by the economic crisis, his supporters believe in a third term. In the polls, his opponent had a slight advantage on Saturday evening. The two candidates both voted in the morning.
